Alan M. Schaeffer, MD | Alan M. Schaeffer was born in 1914 in Atlantic Highlands, NJ to Rev. and Mrs. Joseph Schaeffer and grew up in Barrington, NJ. He prepped at William Penn Charter School in Philadelphia, graduated from Princeton University in 1936 and Jefferson Medical School in 1940. In 1942 he joined the Navy Medical Corps and was assigned as a medical officer to the 50th Construction Battalion at Pearl Harbor and Midway Island. He retired as a Lt Commander in 1946. That same year, Dr. Schaeffer married Vera "Nancy" Cox and opened his private practice in Delanco on the first floor of their house at 229 Willow St. where they also raised two children, Susan and Stephen. Dr. Schaeffer was active in the First Presbyterian Church of Delanco and also served as Chief of Obstetrics at Zurbrugg Hospital in Riverside. He and Nancy moved to 801 Second St. in 1977. He retired from practice in 1981 having delivered over 5,000 babies. In the 1990’s he and Nancy moved to Cadbury in Cherry Hill.
